The Scientific Research Facility (SRF) is equipped with a professional Airbus A330 real-time simulation environment, but the SRF does not have its own visualization system for the outside view. Research projects are primarily prepared and implemented at the SRF workstation. Innovative display philosophies can be integrated into the simulation process or novel control input devices and flight control computers can be implemented.

From 1993 to July 2009, the ILR had an Airbus
A330/340 Full-Flight Simulator (FFS) of the highest certification
Level D (according to JAR STD 1A) certified by the German Federal
Office of Civil Aviation (LBA). The simulator was planned and operated
by the Zentrum für Flugsimulation Berlin GmbH (ZFB) in close
cooperation with Lufthansa Flight Training Berlin GmbH (based at
Berlin-Schönefeld Airport, now Lufthansa Aviation Training).
In addition to pilot training, the simulator also served to carry out diverse research projects and various teaching tasks.

The simulator was additionally equipped with a
special research facility. (Scientific Research Facility, SRF) This
equipment made it possible to access interfaces of the simulator to
implement own software and systems, as well as to couple original
hardware with software components.
Using permanently installed cameras, audio and video signals could be played back and recorded from the cockpit on the SRF (see picture). Data Gathering Utility (DGU) software has a time stamp of the video signal together with simulator data stored on hard disk.
Sale of the A330/340 FFS to Finnair Flight Academy (Helsinki)

The simulator was shut down and dismantled in July
2009, one day after completion of the STENA  test series. It is now
owned and operated by Finnair Flight Academy in Helsinki (Finland).
In February 2010, a test series with 20 pilots was carried out as part of the PPB research project . After another series of tests in the GLS research project , Finnair then upgraded the simulator to Airbus Standard 1.4, cutting the interfaces for research unfortunately.

A A330-200 FFS (FT69) has been put into operation
at the Simulator Centre in Schoenefeld and can now be booked again for
teaching (e.g. flight simulation technology) when available (see
Through a new agreement with LAT, research is now carried out in Frankfurt (A340), Munich (E195, A346 and A320), Schönefeld (B737, A320 and B777), Vienna (Q400) and also Zurich (BCS100/300).
