Ecoefficient Procedures for Air Traffic (EcoPAT)

The internal research project "Ecoefficient Procedures for Air Traffic (EcoPAT") investigates new assessment methods for departure, approach and landing procedures by applying multiple ecoefficient criteria (noise emission, pollutant emission, fuel consumption etc.)

Methods und expected results

By means of noise modelling of single flight events according to ECAC Doc. 29 (4th Edition) using radar and ADS-B data, precise noise contours can be determined. Methods for estimating aircraft mass and thrust using existing flight parameters are currently being developed and validated using a real-time simulation environment and real operational flight data. Subsequently, the validation of the calculated individual levels at significant points with real measurement data for the Berlin-Tegel commercial airport will be performed.

As a result, noise contours for single flight events (noise level LA,MAX ; SEL) can be displayed on suitable GIS data sets and information regarding the exposure of settlement areas, population figures (using population density functions) and other ground-based characteristics can be retrieved.

Furthermore, flight procedures will be evaluated with regard to other eco-efficient parameters (pollutant exchange and fuel consumption) and examined with regard to aeronautical and operational feasibility and efficiency. In addition to the use of BADA3 data from EUROCONTROL to estimate fuel consumption and pollutant emissions, certified full-flight simulators are also used for validation.

Finally, a method is to be developed which, in addition to a noise-related assessment of selected flight procedures, also allows other criteria for an eco-efficient evaluation to be included.
