Ecoefficient Procedures for Air Traffic (EcoPAT)

The internal research project "Ecoefficient Procedures for Air Traffic (EcoPAT") investigates new assessment methods for departure, approach and landing procedures by applying multiple ecoefficient criteria (noise emission, pollutant emission, fuel consumption etc.)

Methods und expected results

Using radar and ADS-B data, noise modelling of single flight events according to ECAC Doc. 29 (3rd Edition) determines precise noise contours. The methods required for estimating aircraft mass and thrust are currently being developed using specific aircraft parameters and validated using flight operational data and the chair's own real-time simulation environment (AARES, SRF).

As a result, determined noise contours for single flight events (LAMAX ; SEL) can be displayed on suitable GIS data sets and subsequently information regarding the exposure of residential areas, population figures (using population density functions) and other urban-related characteristics can be called up.

Furthermore, flight procedures are evaluated with regard to further eco-efficient parameters (engine emissions and fuel consumption) and examined with regard to flight operational feasibility and efficiency. In addition to the use of BADA3 data from EUROCONTROL to estimate fuel consumption and pollutant emissions, precise data recording from flight simulators (AARES, SRF) are also used here.

As a result, a procedure is to be developed which, in addition to a noise-related evaluation of selected flight procedures, also allows other criteria to be included in an eco-efficient evaluation.
