Our Competences

The Chair of Flight Guidance and Air Transport covers all aspects of today’s and future flight operation, adressing legal, economic and eco-efficient issues additionally. Besides the evaluation and validation of operational (flight) procedures and necessary avionic systems hereof, the chair acts as a fundamental connector between aviation and other transport sectors, focusing also on modern infrastructure systems for air traffic management and airports.

Research

The core competencies of the Chair of Flight Guidance and Air Transport in the field of research are basically related to the on-board and ground-based overall system of large civil aircraft and shape the main focus of teaching.

In frequent collaboration with national and international partners, the Chair of Flight Guidance and Air Transport covers the following topics within the research activities:

  • Optimization of flight operation procedures (under consideration of environmental aspects)
  • Development and integration of innovative Air Traffic Control Procedures for Arrival- and Departure-Management (Co-operative Air Traffic Management, Ground and Aircraft Data Communication Systems)
  • Evaluation of future cockpit concepts
  • Safety management systems in aviation
  • Airport safety and security

The use of certified Level-D full-flight simulators for the preparation and implementation of research projects is the main pillar of the research work in the field of flight guidance and air transport. The technical equipment at the department complements the use of full-flight simulators and thus enables a realistic and holistic evaluation and validation of complex systems and procedures.

Education and Teaching

The teaching portfolio in the subject area flight guidance and air transport are firmly integrated into the Bachelor's and Master's programmes of Faculty V, in particular into the Master's programme "Aeronautics and Astronautics". Together with the specific courses of the other ILR chairs, the teaching of the subject area conveys an overall system competence for aircrafts. Among other things, engineering and scientific competences are linked interdisciplinary with characteristic elements of ergonomics (human factors) as well as economic and planning aspects.

 

Furthermore, the chair-owned simulators as well as the real-time simulation network SimNet enable a practical training of the students, whereby theoretically acquired knowledge is practically applied and extended in the courses
